I worked at BBC Studios full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Best benefits available today including great vacation. Great brand

    Cons

Nothing gets done. Never expect help after 5pm.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to fire lazy staff. Lazy staff are demotivating for those trying to contribute meaningful work.

I have been working at BBC Studios full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Very well respected organisation.

Bit cushy "Once you're in, you're in" mentality, especially for creatives.

    Cons

VERY low mobility and growth, no real accountability. You are put into a box and a lid put on over you.

Static and moribund; small-c conservative and middle class (and petrified of being seen as "leftie"). Massive inclusivity problem.

Surprisingly chaotic, transactional, and uncommunicative for such a large, established organisation. Dense thicket of obfuscating management at every turn.

You desperately need info / a decision from Bob, but no-one has seen him for days and is uncontactable. Is he on holiday? WFH? Sick? Just didn't feel like doing his job for a while? No-one seems to know, or care.

Some very unpleasant people who are clearly unsackable - no real options rather than putting up with them, gambling with an internal move, or decide there's no upside in staying.

    Advice to Management

    You're not listening.

I worked at BBC Studios full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Proud to be part of an establishment that is woven into British Culture and British History. Creates some of the best content on TV right now. Starting to become more flexible on how we work ie working from home.

    Cons

Completely flat hierarchy so very little movement or promotion opportunities. Extremely low wages compared to the Industry standard, annual pay increases are way below the inflation rate. Upper management are complete dinosaurs, middle management are mainly from old BBC structure so lots of confusion about direction of company. Have to jump many many hurdles to get anything signed off. HR are entirely for the company and not for the staff, zero support and useless when you ask for any assistance, as most of it is contracted out anyway. Payroll also contracted out so frequent problems with pay and then it takes a long time to be rectified. IT also contracted out so if you have a problem with your laptop you have to call someone in Poland to help you?! If you’re disabled or a parent then forget it. You’re either bullied out of your role or the manager bullying you will eventually leave for an Indie.

    Advice to Management

Support your staff. If you pay peanuts you’ll get monkeys. Nourish the good people you have rather than disregarding them so they move on to another media company. Make sure the values match up with how you behave to your staff. It’s not all about the audience.

The salary doesn't go anywhere because the annual pay rise is nothing and promotions never happen as a flat structure.
