Pros

1Password is in a build moment that feels electric. The company is pulling the right pieces together investing in products, leadership, and people so teams have clarity and support to do great work. The pace has picked up and the bar is higher. That brings some bumps but the direction is clear and the momentum is real. If you love learning fast, collaborating with kind experts, and seeing your work matter, you will thrive here. Come help write the next chapter.

Cons

A hyper fast and evolving environment where priorities move quickly, so it’s best suited for people who can and are willing to make an impact to help take us to the next level.

Pros

Good benefits (401K match, healthcare, PTO)

Cons

1Password recently went through a round of layoffs, citing “culture fit” and “lack of skills for the new role.” I want to clarify what that really means: this was not a reflection of employee performance, but rather a top-down issue stemming from leadership. The culture has shifted dramatically due to poor leadership practices, including rampant nepotism and micromanagement. Rather than fostering innovation or trust, decisions are made behind closed doors with little transparency, and frontline employees are often left in the dark. From a strategic standpoint, the company merged the Account Management and Account Executive teams in an attempt to pivot their go-to-market approach. The goal was to drive expansion within the existing customer base by cross-selling newly acquired products. However, some of these acquisitions—like a procurement and finance platform—have no real alignment with the company’s core offering as a password manager. It feels like the company is chasing growth for the sake of growth, without a coherent vision or product synergy. There is a lack of clarity around the company’s direction, and many decisions seem reactive rather than strategic. Morale has taken a hit, and the internal sentiment among employees is that the company is losing sight of what made it great in the first place. Bottom line: I would not recommend joining 1Password at this time. Unless there’s a significant shift in leadership and strategy, it’s hard to see how the company will regain its footing.

Pros

- Working from home and the flexibility that comes with it is amazing. For those who come into the office once in a while it's a great environment and the coffee is epic. - Immensely successful product, and now doing great things as a subscription service for individuals and organizations. The market especially in the 'corporate' world is wide open and 1Password is in a strong place. - Annual Caribbean cruise for staff - Feels like family. There are some brilliant people that you get to work with and learn from.

Cons

The major con is that AgileBits is still startup mode even though it's very well past that stage. - In places it's very disorganized. Little leadership structure below the founders. - Desperately in need of a formalized HR program and team. - Very miserly in terms of benefits for salary'd staff, All you get is a small allowance to cover health insurance. No other benefits at all. This is very disappointing as almost every other tech firm in the GTA of this size offers many benefits on top of the base salary. For a private company there are no stock options either... - In some cases staff are being paid tens of thousands below the market rate. - If you work outside of Canada you will be a contractor, but don't assume you'll get the typical 1.5x salary that a contractor will get compared to salaried staff.

Thank you so much for the detailed feedback. It's awesome to hear that working here feels like family. Each of the cons you mentioned are things we've worked on improving since 2017 as well. We've added quite a bit of structure, started using an HR tool and building a team to manage it, and tried to make communication with contractors clearer when we hire them. It's definitely a work in progress – growth is tough. Your review is the oldest one we have, and it's been read by the leadership team before. I'll give them a nudge about it now as well. Thanks again.
