      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Wolfspeed

      Interview

Initially an HR representative contacted me and asked me to fill out a long questionnaire with about 30 stereotypical job interview questions (greatest strengths, weaknesses, work habits, etc). I was given 3 days (over a weekend) to answer them and return the questionnaire via email. A few months later I was contacted by a manager and had a phone screen. The manager asked about my research experience and how I'd feel transitioning to a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The rest of the phone screen is discussing the job expectations, work schedule, etc. The 3rd step was a Skype interview with two managers where I was asked to give a 30 minute presentation on my graduate research. The managers were extremely curt and not very polite. Felt like they didn't want to be there. One of them was more tolerable than the other; he asked about big picture type stuff, what kind of applications do you see for the research, what are problems you solved, etc. The other manager felt like he was trying to purposefully trip me up; he kept asking questions about very particular details that were almost completely irrelevant to the subject. He was trying to find weaknesses in the presentation, and then acted kind of smug when he got to the point where you didn't know the answer to something. It felt like an attack, and it wasn't a pleasant experience at all. I was not selected for the last interview step, an on-site interview.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Wolfspeed in Aug 2019

      Interview

Applied online through the Cree website. Heard back from the hiring manager within a couple weeks. Had a phone screening with the hiring manager and then a skype interview with his team 2 weeks after that to present my doctoral research. Both interviews were strange, the phone screen especially. He would beat around the bush of what he wanted to know, and phrased the questions in such an odd manner. He also asked me a question set up as, "would option A or option B would be a better way to do this thing?" Well, it was neither and he was trying to trip me up. He tried this more than once, and I find that to be rude. Reading through some of these interview reviews, I was really dreading the worst. Thankfully, it wasn't as bad as I feared, and the hiring manager wasn't as rude as some of the reviews indicated. However, I still had a negative experience and I'm honestly glad I didn't get an offer. There wasn't a good fit on either side apparently. As a note, one of my friends also interviewed with them and did get an offer. He declined because they couldn't agree on salary. What they offered wasn't going to be worth working 50-60 hours a week for a manager with a big ego.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Wolfspeed (Durham, NC) in Jul 2018

      Interview

Interview process consisted of phone screen, followed by full day presentation/interview/lunch. Afterwards was invited to dinner with several of the interviewers. I found that the Cree interview process was very enjoyable. The interviewers were warm and friendly, and interviews felt much like research discussions one would have with colleagues. Obviously, some questions were still challenging and were designed to try and test knowledge/thought process. Presentation was around 30 minutes max while individual interviews varied from 30-45 minutes each.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

One Brain Teaser type question on initial phone screen.
      Answer question

      Question 2

Several questions directly related to presented research/equipment used in presented research. SEM, FIB, CVD etc.
