      Digital Marketing Specialist Interview

      Jul 10, 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at WinnCompanies

      Interview

The position was fairly new. There was someone in the position at the time I was hiring that was leaving, but all they had done was archive content according to the manager. They were looking for someone to start an entire brand new marketing campaign for the company. I was called by a recruiter who set me up with about 2 interviews. One was with the manager for this position and one was for the regional manager for marketing. In the second interview, it was clear that the regional manager was very out of touch with the department and honestly had no idea what the position even consisted of or what the department did. Any questions that were asked were deferred to the position manager. Otherwise, the main interview parts when pretty smoothly. The really bad part was the offer/negotiation stage. I received a verbal offer, but the recruiter refused to give me any benefits information unless I "verbally accepted" the position first without any other information besides the salary. First red flag. I did so and then was finally sent the rest of the information about the company and position. I did some market research based off salaries in the area and my experience. I was not new to the industry and had several marketing jobs before this. I believed I was being paid under value, so as most normal people would, I tried to negotiate. The recruiter said they didn't know if they would be able to meet my needs, but she would forward my request to the manager. The manager called back a few days later to ask me why I was trying to negotiate my wage and sounded offended that I had even asked in the first place even though this is standard practice. As I laid out my facts and tried to explain my reasoning, the manager responded with "Are you okay?" Red flag number two. I was so shocked and offended that I couldn't even get my next sentence out. I was then told that my request could not be met and I responded that I understood. The manager then accused me of sounding like I was no longer excited about the position and told me that she did not want to hire me if I would move on from the position quickly, which was a bold assumption which I felt I did not give the impression of. I asked how they would like to proceed from here. The manager then told me that they were still offering the position to me as I was their first choice and they were not planning to offer it to anyone else unless I declined, and they would give me the weekend to think about my decision. I cordially agreed and waited until Monday. Immediately first thing Monday morning, I received an email from the recruiter stating that my offer had been rescinded. I feel like this was probably one of the most insulting negotations I've ever had and the entire process was very unprofessional. Fortunately, I proceeded to move on to a healthier position at a less toxic company that was more understanding during the negotiation process, which was the bare minimum that I expected from this company.
