      Intern Interview

      Apr 6, 2017
      Anonymous employee
      Washington, DC
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at West Wing Writers (Washington, DC) in Dec 2015

      Interview

I first completed an online application consisting of two major writing samples and an abbreviated cover letter (I chose to write a new Op-Ed for the purposes of this application and would encourage applicants who are doing the same to look carefully at the example pieces provided). I was then given a week to complete a research and writing test that mimics the type of work required during the internship—tracking down relevant facts, statistics, and interesting anecdotes to drive home the topic at hand and familiarizing myself with a new subject thoroughly enough to write brief, high-level remarks. Finally, I had a phone interview (video is the norm, but there was a software glitch) with four WWW employees. It was conversational, and after a few questions about my resume and qualifications, it seemed mostly to be a "fit" interview. I reached back out to one of my interviewers afterwards to clarify the application timeline, as I needed to respond to another offer, and he was very helpful and responsive. The entire process, while rigorous, was actually pretty enjoyable.

      Question 1

My interviewers stressed that, although minimal, the administrative work expected of interns is essential to the company's function. They asked if I had any experience with similar tasks and if I was committed to completing admin work with as much dedication as I have my writing work.
