I submitted my application materials via email and was contacted to do a 30 minute phone interview. After a few days or a week I was then I was offered the internship for the summer. Since the internship in unpaid the hiring processes isn't unreasonably difficult.

Over the phone. The process was very official and followed up with me a couple days later to offer me the job. Interviewer was very official and ended up being on of my managers.
