      Data Scientist Interview

      Feb 8, 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Mateo, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Upstart (San Mateo, CA) in Jan 2019

      Interview

I never applied to upstart. I think my resume was passed to them by a recruiter that I was in contact with. The process was taking more than 3 months before I end to that! very funny and inefficient system . Around mid Nov 2018, I was contacted by their HR through email asking to give them some time for interview. She was very lazy in responding to emails and interestingly each time I gave my availabilities (which I think was very flexible) for the next week, after 4-5 days she was responding back that their data scientists are busy and asking me to give another times and the same story. It was funny that we couldn't set any time for few weeks. I got curious and asked them before asking about any more availabilities somebody from recruiting team should call me. I talked to a guy which was cool and sharp and decided to continue interview process. It was mid December and he asked to give sometime for 2nd week of January. I talked to a data scientist on their phone interview. He asked some ML questions and a coding question which was relatively easy and straight forward. Then didn't hear from them for couple weeks until I asked for feed back then replied that feeb back was positive they want to do another phone interview. We set the date for the interview, few days before interview I asked to reschedule the interview. The same story again! lazy HR and busy data scientists!!! So I decided to end the process.

Hi There. I'm so sorry that your experience didn't go well and that we didn't hustle on your application faster. My team was definitely short staffed in November and it looks like your interview experience suffered because of it. Since you first applied to us, we brought on two Data Science recruiters (it sounds like one that you spoke to), and two Coordinators so that we can move faster in the process. With that said, it sounds like the data science team also had limited availability and I want to make sure we don't drop any other balls now that we have extra resources. Since this is confidential, I'm unable to contact you but if you're open to it, I'd like to chat with you for a few minutes about your process. If you are willing to do that, I'll send you a gift card to Amazon (or wherever else you would like) for $25. Thanks, Heather Robertt

      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Upstart (San Diego, CA) in Feb 2025

      Interview

3 rounds, first is lead, then some peers, then hr. Totally very difficulty, since they hope candicator can work for them, no need to train. So if you are a graduate, that's not good place for you, and also very hard to get offer or their company.

      Data Scientist Interview

      Jun 13, 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Upstart (New York, NY) in Jun 2022

      Interview

HR phone interview, where the HR rep was super nice and dug relatively deep into my experience and previous work. 1st round interview with Sr. Research Scientist was just alright. Interviewer showed up 5 mins late (sure if happens, no biggie) and gave a very speedy intro of the company. I gave an intro of my experience. Just 1 question on my experience and moved into coding. While coding it was a bit odd the interviewer kept wanting me to change x or y about the code or how I was solving it before I could finish completely. This threw me off a bit, as every other place I've interviewed they let you finish and then follow up if you could do x or y to improve performance, etc. Fairly straight forward stats and A/B to finish.
