      Devops Engineer Interview

      Jan 25, 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Trilitech (London, England) in Dec 2022

      Interview

I initially went through a screening call with the hiring manager, this was a very general discussion and left me with a positive outlook moving into my next discussion. It mostly consisted of talks about my roles, why I applied and what the company does/is. The next interview was a technical interview and consisted of 4 segments: - Experience based on CV (15 minutes) - Coding Exercise (20 minutes) - GCP Usage (15 minutes) - Comparison on GCP / AWS and the differences in my exposure to them (10 minutes) Throughout the interview there were no discussions on anything I had worked with, or my prior experience on real world tasks. I would explain something, then we'd move onto the next topic. There was no deep dive into what I have worked with or on in prior positions I have held and a lot of emphasis on the coding exercise, which for a someone in a DevOps/SRE role. The challenge was to add two binary strings together, which in my 10+ years of experience is something I've never had to do. In my case, during the interview I struggled with understanding the core requirements and whilst I explained and understood what was needed, couldn't get that into the program in time and ended that segment without finishing the exercise and overall doing quite poorly. Throughout the interview, the interviewer didn't seem engaged in my experience or prior roles. They did provide some help with understanding the coding exercise but did not really provide much insight beyond "Yes" or "No" when specifically asking about the way I was implementing things. From my experience during the interview, it feels as though they are looking for an experience software engineer to take the role of DevOps. My suggestion to the company is to adjust your expectations and ensure the format of the discussion is more tailored for the job description. The job description did not give me any indication that there was such a heavy emphasis on the ability to write code. Additionally, consider diving into things you know a candidate has worked with. Play to their strengths to see if they can explain to you how they did something and use that to determine whether the candidate would be a good fit, particularly for people in the DevOps/SRE space.

      Question 1

Tell me about your current role / What you do? Write a program that add these binary strings together. How do you currently utilize GCP? What do you think are the differences between AWS and GCP? Do you have any questions for us?

      Devops Engineer Interview

      Feb 11, 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at Trilitech (London, England) in Jan 2024

      Interview

I appreciated the initial interview invitation from Trillitech, though I was disappointed when it was canceled at the last minute. Three months later, they reached back out to resume the hiring process. While I understand scheduling challenges can occur, the substantial delay between interviews gave me pause about the clarity of the open role and hiring priorities. The technical questions during the coding and systems design portions covered foundational topics, but did not seem fully aligned with the responsibilities outlined for the position. Additionally, some questions from the engineering lead focused more on peripheral topics than core competencies for this role. Moving forward, I would suggest Trillitech reviews the job description to ensure the required qualifications and responsibilities reflect the ideal candidate. Additionally, tailoring the technical interview questions to the day-to-day work of the position could aid in assessment. I wish the team at Trillitech the best as they continue building out their group.
