Global Lead of Monetization Customer Experience Interview

      May 25, 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Mountain View, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through other source. I interviewed at TikTok (Mountain View, CA) in May 2021

      Interview

The interview process was a bit short. I made it to the second round. I interviewed with HR, then a colleague and it wasn't up until I met with the direct manager that I realized the role was significantly different than what I had expected given the job spec and prior conversations. The direct manager's internet connection was really bad and I think it ultimately affected the interview. They turned their video off and it did not help, so I was in a position where I could not see them or hear them. That person also seemed very uninterested in interviewing me and seemed to be annoyed with anything I said. They asked cognitive ability questions, so in other words, role play scenarios. I asked questions to make proper assumptions and this seemed to upset that person. At one point, that person also told me that they wanted to hire someone who understood the questions they were asking and at that point I knew the interview was over and was a waste of both of our time. Clearly I understood the questions and answered them properly. The internet connection and wanting to make proper assumptions did not mean I did not understand the question. It felt a bit rude, unprofessional and unnecessary given the time of interview (10pm EST) and all the time I spent to prepare. I think their attitude was a result of the role being significantly different than what I do in my career but is not an excuse to be rude to someone who is being interviewed. I also got the sense that departments do not talk to one another and I also firmly believe no one reviewed my resume before meeting me. Overall I feel like TikTok wasted my time, didn't provide enough information to allow me to decide if I wanted to interview with them and the direct manager is unfortunately not someone I would see myself working with, ever. I also do not see how TikTok holds a high standard for their core values but do not portray it during their interview process. I hope TikTok takes this feedback in stride and fixes their interview process.

Thank you for your detailed feedback. We apologize for your negative experience in your second interview, and we hope you understand that it was not representative of what we stand for in our recruiting process at TikTok. It's very important to us that our interviewers listen and lead thoughtful conversations, giving candidates a real chance to highlight their strengths, but your experience fell short. We've relayed your feedback to our local team and will continue to work on improving the issues you've highlighted. Please reach out to us at global-oc@tiktok.com if you'd like to continue discussing how we can improve for future candidates!
