      Software Engineer Interview

      Mar 24, 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Boston, MA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at TaxJar (Boston, MA) in Mar 2021

      Interview

A recruiter reached out on LinkedIn for a software engineer position and it looked like it could have been a good fit for my background. I did some more research about the company it looks like they expect candidates to do a "mutual assessment" where you work 1 - 3 months for this company on a reduced salary, with no benefits. This expectation exists even if you are already employed. Most employers will let you go you on the spot if you are working for another company so I have no idea what they are thinking there. Also going without benefits for up to 3 months if you have a family for the chance at 1 job just isn't logical. If you look on their social media accounts 95% of their employees are young, so it's clear who they are aiming for with this. I've never heard of anything like this and could not believe what they were asking, so I removed myself from the process.

Thank you for raising your concerns about our mutual assessment, or MA, process. We'd like to take this opportunity to address a few misconceptions. The MA typically lasts between 30-40 hours dependent upon the role, and our candidate dictates the schedule according to their availability and needs .We think of our MA process as a "paid peek behind the curtain," as well as the last part of the assessment process. This piece is all about the "mutual" benefits of joining TaxJar. Do we align on the work itself? Do we share the same set of values? Will YOU like the ways in which we work together to solve problems? We'd rather you find out during the assessment phase if TaxJar is for you, before you quit your job, or change your life. We want you to be 100% certain that you can do the best work of your career here at TaxJar. We think having an experience with the teams you'll work with, during the assessment phase is much more powerful and impactful upfront, than finding out 90 days in during a probationary period that you've misjudged the work or the place. That's why we put you in the driver's seat and give you the ability to really check out what it's like here. We pay you for that time. You'll get your hands and mind engaged as a way of discovering how this all works, but you won't be doing the job all the way until you begin with us full-time. Helping you have balance, even in the MA is part of our culture. Our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Report can be found on our Life at TaxJar blog, and contains a breakdown of the ages of our teammates. We stand against all forms of discrimination, including age discrimination. We know TaxJar isn't for everyone. We are building a place that we are proud of, a place where we want to rewrite the way work works. We think old practices like probationary periods and dropping folks in at the deep end of the pool don't foster a progressive, productive work environment. We've built our process in such a way that everyone benefits - the candidate, the team they work with and the company as a whole. So we take a different approach to traditional processes, and a stance that flies in the face of what people are used to. We will use your feedback to better communicate this to candidates and thank you again for taking the time to leave your thoughts.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at TaxJar (Portland, OR) in Sep 2020

      Interview

Overall the interview was pleasant but I'm giving it a thumbs down because I got ghosted after completing all 3 rounds of interviews. First was the phone screening, then a technical challenge, then a cultural interview. I waited 2 weeks after the final interview and never heard back so I ended up accepting an offer elsewhere and let them know. No response to that either. Don't waste your time here.

      Interview

Applied online and asked to answer a series of questions, which took some time. Received a templated response that they decided to move forward with other candidates. No feedback. If a company expects candidates to put in extra time during an application process, there should be some kind of feedback to compensate for the candidate's time.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on our screening process. Due to the volume of applications we receive for each position, we are unable to personally provide feedback to each candidate.
