Two phone interviews (including one with an overseas office), one on-site interview in their Bala Cynwyd office, and a videoconferencing interview while in their Bala Cynwyd facility. At first things seemed to be going well and they seemed to be very interested in me. Then they decided to hire somebody else as their new FPGA group leader. OK, no problem, I probably wasn't really well-qualified for that anyway. They said they would let their new hire settle in, review resumes, and then he would make a decision on the first hire(s) for his group. So I wasn't out of the running yet. Anyway, after about a month, I get a voice message from them telling me that they decided to go with another candidate but they wanted me to "keep me posted on my career." That was the end of it.
Truth be told, I think as soon as they realized I had a non-compete agreement in effect from another company, they decided that instead of just telling me flat-out "we don't want to hire you because of the agreement and we have no intentions of trying to negotiate with your former employer" or "we'll hire you, but we're not going to let you start until your non-compete expires", they would just "keep me hanging on" in the hopes that I would not find work elsewhere.
This left a bad taste in my mouth - I sent them a terse e-mail thanking them. Since then, I did a consulting assignment in the tech sector and following the expiration of my non-compete agreement, I ended up at one of SIG's biggest rivals. I'm looking forward to helping that rival beat them with some low-latency FPGA technology.
