I had an initial phone interview and then was sent an 8 hour tech assignment (unpaid) - it mirrors the experience of many others that have reviewed here. I spent the 8 hours working on the tech assignment which was, despite being a 'full stack' assessment, heavily front-end focused.
I submitted the assignment - which seemed to mainly be testing ones ability to navigate the Youtube Live API (which is slightly horrendous) rather than one's ability to code. I heard nothing back for three and a half weeks and so I sent a follow up.
I received the generic copy-paste reply of 'Unfortunately, we will be moving forward with candidates who more closely fit our hiring requirements.'
I emailed them back politely requesting some feedback on the take home. 8 hours to work on a tech assessment is a lot, the very least that they could do is provide some feedback to candidates. The arrogance of companies like this in tech is frustrating. They don't seem to realize that someone who doesn't meet their requirements today, may in a few years time be exactly who they are looking for. Unfortunately the tech scene in Vancouver is small, and people remember these bad interview experiences.
I emailed them three times requesting feedback - the first time I got a reply saying the HR person had asked for this from the tech lead, the second two times I was ghosted and never heard back from them.
Super super disappointing from a company that I had respected before. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect. It was such a waste of time that I could have spent pursuing other opportunities. Honestly, unless you are SUPER invested in working for them, I would steer very clear.
