      Bilingual Math/ESL Teacher Interview

      Nov 26, 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Tampa, FL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at SAGA Education (Tampa, FL) in Nov 2020

      Interview

I didn't receive an offer from SAGA. That is totally fine. I have a job offer from a different and much more caring organization who provided explicit feedback from education experts every step of the way. SAGA requested me to complete a project as part of the recruitment process. I spent about 5-6 hours completing the project and days later, I received a generic automated email indicating I was not selected as a candidate. That is understandable. Not everyone gets job offers it; is part of the job hunting process. What is not ethical is when a company (SAGA) requires a candidate to work towards a project (14 page lesson plan - 3 part project- complete in 72 hours- special font requirements and all) and doesn't compensate you for your time or give you proper feedback as to how you can improve your chances with a different organization. I felt like I provided them with 'free' work and that they did not respect me as a professional. After all, if they are truly 'experts' and care about improving educational outcomes for all English Language Learners and teacher growth, the least they can do is give feedback so that the candidate can improve their skills and become a more effective professional in that specific field (MATH/ELLs). Their email notifying me that I was not selected was actually in my spam folder because it was an automated email! Tasteless, unprofessional and unethical. They expect free work and cannot take the time or consideration to at least send a personalized email or phone call. Ultimately, the process for applying for jobs requires the candidate to also study the potential employer, their style and how they can contribute to a candidate's professional growth. In my situation, I did not learn anything from this company. It actually made me lose my trust in the whole application process since some companies will unfortunately not understand the value and work of a candidate even throughout the hiring process. I would be very careful in investing hours for a project with them unless they can give you feedback (even if they do not hire you). Ask for that explicitly before moving forward with them if you truly value your time and expertise. The lack of respect and consideration told me everything I needed to know about the type of work environment you can expect from them.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I don't think they know what they are looking for based on their line of questioning. The project itself was a 3 step process. This position would not even be necessary if they actually hired fully bilingual certified Math teachers or if they invested in training all of their tutors in best practices for ELLs. I know a few excellent Math teachers who are bilingual but I wouldn't recommend them to invest their time interviewing for them.
