      Junior Software Engineer Interview

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 months. I interviewed at Quantori (Yerevan, Yerevan) in Aug 2023

      Interview

In my experience, there were four key stages of the interview process. 1. Interview for Admission to the Python School I initially enrolled in Quantori Python School, where I studied from June to September 2023. At the application screening stage, I passed a test on logic and basic programming understanding. This was followed by a group interview focusing on soft skills and English proficiency with Python School managers, which led to four months of online training. 2. Intermediate Interview at Python School At the end of the second month of training, an intermediate 15-minute interview was held. It consisted of 15-20 Python basic questions. To advance to the company, it was required to successfully complete the Quantori Python School, which included completing almost all homework with at least an A+ grade. Online classes were held twice a week with mandatory homework for each. The culmination of the online classes was a final project: a Flask-based website with numerous technical requirements. Completing this final project successfully was also a prerequisite for graduation from Python School and further participation in interviews. 3. Main Technical Interview Upon successful completion of the Python School, candidates are invited to the main technical interview, which in my case, was conducted by two Senior Software Engineers and lasted about 2.5 hours. Approximately 40-50 questions of the different caliber were asked, many quite challenging, leading to substantial live coding. There were quite a lot of “tricky” questions. Knowledge of basic issues (language syntax, data types, OOP, and so on) was presumed – they were not asked about this separately, and their knowledge was indirectly tested in live coding. In addition, basic knowledge had already been tested during the intermediate interview at the Python School, without passing which it was impossible to get to the next round of interviews. Overall, the emphasis was on understanding how Python works under the hood, understanding the algorithmic complexities and data structures, understanding the main web frameworks (Django and/or Flask). Without this knowledge, passing the interview would be impossible. 4. Interview with a senior manager After the technical stages, an interview with one of the senior managers is conducted. I was not asked any technical questions during this interview. They were of the following kind: 1. What are your impressions from the previous interview? 2. Why are you changing your profession? 3. Do you want to work in science? 4. What area of Python development would you like to delve into next? 5. What are the salary expectations? 6. What kind of team would you like to work for (big or small)? 7. Do you want to work in the office or remotely? The senior manager also provided information about the local working conditions in Armenia and other administrative matters.
