I applied online. I interviewed at Pyka (Alameda, CA) in Jan 2026
Interview
I attended an onsite interview at Pyka that included a one-hour technical assessment after an initial tour. I came in very enthusiastic, as I have experience and strong interest in both robotics and aviation.
Unfortunately, the technical assessment was discouraging. The individual observing frequently pointed out mistakes in a blunt, non-constructive way and often took over tasks instead of allowing me to learn or correct them. While I was told beforehand that questions were encouraged and that the company accepted candidates ranging from beginner to advanced levels, the assessment felt as though near-perfect knowledge of every tool was expected. Several tools used were not listed in the job description.
Instructions during the assessment were often unclear, and some mistakes were later cited despite following the exact directions given. I also felt that one hour was not sufficient for a fair evaluation, especially when unfamiliar tools were involved. A longer assessment with clearer guidance would have been more appropriate.
I understand the high standards required in aviation, but professionalism, clear communication, and constructive feedback are just as important in an interview setting. Overall, the experience did not align with what was communicated by HR regarding training and experience expectations. Production-level candidates should be fully comfortable with all tools before applying.

- Recruiter screening
- Hiring Manager call to go over experience
- Technical Assignment is a design challenge where they ask for 20% CAD/BOM/and a presentation. They provided no feedback (even after asking for it), which is wild considering I spent a minimum of 4 days working on this project.
