      Data Scientist Interview

      Feb 12, 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied in-person. I interviewed at Onzo (London, England)

      Interview

Three/Four stage interview process. The first was a telephone call with the CTO. The second part of the process involved speaking with the CTO and the product dept. The third involved the previous interviewers and the data science team members. The primary discussion in the telephone interview and first face to face entered around leading a team that was in trouble. The problem for the company is that most of their data scientists have left (including the former Head). Furthermore some of the Data Science work seems to have been left in the hands of relatively inexperienced contractors and employees (at least it seems so from the questions that I was asked in the final interview). This is compounded with a company that has changed direction several times in the past few years. So the job for a new data science team leader is to save the sinking ship (a turn around artist). The next face to face interview was a superb way for me to understand the company, the people in the company and what the culture is like. One person asked a couple of technically flawed questions. The other questions mostly did not show what I could bring to the company. In any case, I realised that this was not the place for me. I was not left with feeling of sound company strategy nor of strong leadership. I felt it would be a good place for someone with little experience to come play around and leave with a CV mark to show that they had some "real" experience. It was relief for me to leave the building.
