      Graphic Designer Interview

      Jun 27, 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Waterloo, ON
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Onward Multi-Corp (Waterloo, ON) in Feb 2017

      Interview

I applied for the position through Indeed's website. I received an email from their Creative Director saying he wanted to meet in person to talk about the position and we scheduled a time to do so. I went in for our scheduled interview, which started out like most typical Graphic Designer position interviews. The job listing required FIVE YEARS experience, and the CD expressed that in addition to the skills required by the position, my experience and ability in web design, motion graphics, video editing and photography would be a major asset and would be used in the position. The meeting gradually turned from a typical interview into what seemed like an orientation. The CD gave me the ins and outs of the position, including details of processes and tasks, then went on to take me up to their showroom and gave me the low down on all of their product lines and further details on how they operate. The meeting concluded after almost an hour-and-a-half with me feeling good about my prospects of moving on in the hiring process, as the CD expressed repeatedly how I could contribute to their team. A few questions on my part informed me of some of the logistics of the position – office hours, benefits, work environment – but no pay information, not even a ballpark figure. A couple of weeks passed when the CD sent me a follow up email with the position's hourly pay rate and an invitation for a second interview, if I was still interested in the position. The offered pay rate was poor at best, in line with what a new graduate should expect. This wouldn't have been an issue had the job posting not asked for five years of experience, and if my skill set beyond what the position asked for wasn't brought into play by the interviewer. I replied to the CD and politely informed him that the offered pay rate was unfair for the position and that I was no longer interested in the position. All things considered, the hour-and-a-half interview was a tremendous waste of time and an indication that Onward needs help with their recruiting process, or that they are purposefully looking to exploit people by offering low and unfair wages.
