      Embedded Software Engineer Interview

      Jan 14, 2025
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Nokomis in Jan 2024

      Interview

I lived out of state and received a call from their recruiter. The interview process in total took about 3 weeks with 3 phone interviews and 1 in person. They did fly me out and pay for a hotel. This in person interview lasted almost the entire day, 5 or 6 hours, and they GRILL you. I have no problem with difficult and technical interviews. You don't have to be perfect and the interviewers that are fellow staff are encouraging and intelligent about what they want, there are smart people working there. Management portion of the interviews, however, seemed to be used to intimidate, condescend your experience (almost assuming you are lying or trying to find holes in your skills that justify them paying you less), and especially with the CEO, get free information out of you without paying you. They have an extremely strict 8-5 schedule, if you go to a dentist appointment, you have to take time off or not get paid. No sick time. You MUST work for free writing proposals for government funding after hours at least one day a week. They will gauge your willingness to be taken advantage of and work your life away for extremely menial pay. Speaking of, the pay is absolutely horrible and they will say it is because the company is small and their 401k is great, but you will never see that 401k money as they only pay into it matching your investment in one lump sum once a year. They know people typically leave before then and are trying not to pay out, and the vesting schedule is not realistic. They spend their money on the loyal henchmen of managers who make more than twice what the most critical engineers do, and typically companies that get paid through contracts take 30% of the engineer pay and the rest goes towards salaries, but at Nokomis, they take closer to 60% for themselves. Even if you win an contract and qualify for the bonus outlined in your offer, getting that money is "like pulling teeth" (quote from a main proposal writer there) The red flags I noticed in my interview were: - Not being able to even eat my nice lunch because they are grilling you the entire time - Demanding more technical and detailed answers on how you would do something or how something works and how you would test things. They are trying to get free information. - the CEO will say "our company is debt free, and we never have problems paying people on time" which should be the first thing an interviewee should NOT be worried about. Just strange he feels like he has to say this, especially since they are so stingy about paying you for the time you work there. You can work 60 hours there and get paid for 36 because during the hours of 8-5 you took a half day, even though you more than made up your time. This is a dangerous and toxic place to spend your valuable time. I would advise 95% of people to never consider this company. But if you are in a place in your life where all you want to do is work and learn and nothing and no one else matters to you, you don't mind being disrespected publicly in front of the rest of the company, and you are willing to do all of this extra work for 50% of the industry rate, this place will work fine.
