I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at NIH (Bethesda, MD) in Jan 2014
Interview
The interview was pretty standard for such an academic/research institute: Phone call with manager for 15-30 minutes. It was basically an introduction of what I did during my PhD and they explained to me what their branch does. Then they flew me in and I gave a presentation to the whole branch. Then I had a group meeting with my manager and his colleagues.
The interview process was overall fairly easy. The interviewers were friendly and the conversations were tailored to research interests, goals and experience. The process began as a panel interview followed by one on one interview.
The HR interviewed me and asked questions one by one. One day, one person. A total of 8 HR interviewed me, and each person talked for one hour with me, so I spent 8 hours.
