I was referred by someone who worked in the store, after there had been high turnover. I was called to come in for a single Interview, answered numerous questions and went over my submitted resume and application in person. Had an offer the following morning.

Originally applied for the collections internship and got a response right away from an employee under the "teen programs" department which was odd as internships are usually for college aged + candidates. The reply however was also particular... the position had already been filled. I applied before the deadline. Everyone knows that for the most part candidates apply until the closing of the application and then screening commences. But if someone had filled the position before the application deadline then that 1) does not give other candidates a possibility for landing "open" roles, and 2) the person who was chosen for the role may have been pre selected from knowing someone else at the museum beforehand. I was then encouraged to apply for the photography internship and accepted to do so in which a cover letter had to be rewritten from scratch. Again, a response was prompt and was told this time if their party (the curator) was interested, they would be in touch directly to schedule an interview. This was so silly, all professionals should send an email even if they do not decide on the candidate who had applied. That way there is an equal weight from the process pulled from both parties; literally wrote two cover letters to never be contacted again in any shape or form, no chance of feedback either. From the experience, seems like you may need to know someone at the institution to be considered for a role. Not to mention, the lack of professionalism when it comes to communication. The fact that a teen programs employee responds to future interns, lets us know that interns might not be taken very seriously either.
