      Business Operations Specialist Interview

      Anonymous interview candidate
Santa Fe Springs, Los Angeles, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Santa Fe Springs, Los Angeles, CA)

      Interview

Phone Interview. After posting my resume on MONSTER, I received a TEXT MESSAGE from a recruiter from the HR office of McMaster-Carr. She said she wanted to speak to me about opportunities at Mc Master-Carr after finding my resume online. After this conversation, which was a phone interview, I was scheduled for an in person interview. ==== Scheduled Interview (various parts) – she said it was 2.5 hours long, they had me stay for almost 4 hours. Consisted of 2 interviews, a test, and 1 shadow (however they asked me to stay longer to do a second shadow). Filled out paperwork for 30 minutes with HR Clerk. 2 documents (Permission to Self-Identify Form & an Application.) The application asked for Supervisors names and contact phone numbers along with past salaries. It also went as far back as to ask what HIGH SCHOOL you went to, clubs you were in, HS GPA, Graduate GPA etc. Asked for interests and hobbies as well. Interview 1, Interview 1 with Txxxx. Interview 1 was more surface type questions, going over what I did at my past companies. T was much more personable and warm in the interview process. She made me feel at ease and comfortable. Shadow (approx. 15-20minutes). After my first interview, I shadowed someone in the TEXT department (they receive customer orders/complaints that need to be fixed all via TEXT or email. You don’t actually talk to a customer live.) You are switching through various windows to try and solve a client problem,( ie, wrong order number, client gave wrong part number) each problem takes 2-3 minutes, so you are answering email after email and are scored on efficiency Tests. After Shadow, I was lead to a computer by the HR clerk to take 3 tests in regards to their online catalogue. The “emails” were printed on paper. You are given 30 minutes to complete all three: Use Mc-Master online catalogue to locate a specific product for a customer and email customer back. Prompt 1: “I am looking for a stapler, nothing too fancy, it can’t rust. I want this product number stapler #xxxxxx, but in a black.” Prompt 2: “I ordered these storage cabinets for my warehouse, however I did not receive two bins. I have a big inspection soon and I need these ASAP. Also I noticed that it is suppose to come with these “casters”. The product did not come with the “casters.” The prompt also asks you what you would improve upon on the webpage to make it easier for the customer and to prevent from further miscommunication. In the second prompt, you also have to write a summary or the transaction for an employee. Prompt 3: you are asked to listen to a conversation once between an employee and a customer and to take notes and solve the customer’s problem. Interview 2 with Cxxxxxx (same person that phone-screened me). After my tests, I had my last face to face interview. Interview 2 was more deep diving. C, again, was quite dry. After asking her round of questions I was tested again. She had me use their physical 5 inch thick catalogue to locate a flashlight, and asked me questions about the flashlight. This wasn’t role play, she wanted to see how I navigated through the catalogue. The catalogue isn’t in alphabetical order, so use the “content page” on the back of the cover and so on. Questions asked: is it water-proof, wattage, battery life (hrs). After my Last interview with C. She scheduled me to do a second shadow for the phone department bc she said that they were actually interviewing for more than one position. The phone department was like a call center. Customers call in and you put in orders for them LIVE. An HR representative told me, “ohh, you must have communicated well and come across well if she is having you shadow for both positions.” Annoyingly, I did not receive an offer. I got a rejection letter the next day that was very impersonal and was written by a recruiting manager that I didn't even met.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Here are some interview Questions: At your role with this company, what would you say was the most important and least important things you did. Why would you consider that least important? What would you say is the biggest mistake that someone in your old role could made? Would you return to your old jobs, if given the chance? Why did you leave? Tell me about something you implemented at work that you were proud of. Tell me about something you implemented that did not work out. Tell me about a time you solved a problem for a customer. (ensure customer is satisfied at the end of your example). They did not ask the standard “tell me about your strengths and weaknesses”

      Business Operations Specialist Interview

      Elmhurst, IL
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Elmhurst, IL)

      Interview

A local recruiter emailed me using the resume I posted on a job site. I was skeptical at first, but decided to schedule a phone interview. The phone interview was a basic screening and concluded with an invite to interview in person. The in person interview lasted a total 3 hours. It was very traditional in that I came in suited up and immediately presented with a paper application. After I turned in my application, the recruiter gave me a tour of the facility with stops in between for interview questions. Following the tour, I was led into a small interview room with a catalog and computer. I was interviewed by the recruiter, HR Manager, then a Regional Manager. Then I was instructed to run through a customer service scenario, verbally discuss my response, and type a mock email to customer. The exercise requires you listen to an audio from a past customer call. If I remember correctly, the customer had purchased an industrial cart but the wheel was damaged. You have to discuss a solution with interviewer and email the customer. I was called 2 days later with an offer to join the company.

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Chicago, IL) in Jan 2016

      Interview

It's a bit of an extended process. First they'll phone screen you to make sure you're truly a potential fit with the company. Once you pass that you'll be invited into their offices for a "career day" of sorts where they show you what it is they actually do and the multiple offices that work together to get the job done. By all means, it seems like a glorified call center. They'll make you go through an initial interview off the bat, then you'll shadow different people throughout the office to see what they truly do. Afterwards they sit you down to give you a written communication test (my test was basically responding to customer inquiries about certain items and giving them the appropriate part number). That lasted me about 45 minutes. Afterwards you'll interview one last time and they'll check you to see what your thoughts are and if you still would be interested. In sum, it lasted about 3 hours total. A few days after my interview, I was called back and told I was going to be offered a position... And here's why I didn't accept... Not in what I went in to interview in, but something else all together. The position they offered is something I'm wholly overqualified for. Reason for the negative review? I'm positive I was not offered the Business Ops Specialist role because of my race. I'be never made. Claim like this before, but I'm positive it's only for these reasons. Take one look inside their offices and then their warehouse and you'll see that the only people of color to be found in the building will be in the warehouse.

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Trenton, NJ) in Oct 2015

      Interview

Contacted by HR person who set up a phone call. The HR person didn't confirm the call, so I wasn't sure it was going to happen, but it did. HR person was speaking about a kind of generalist role, and wouldn't answer which area of the company this would be for. This person kept saying things about how the company is good at what they do, but no examples or real info. Even though I have quite a bit of experience, HR person suggested a seriously low salary point and we concluded together that this wasn't for me.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Asked what type of salary I was looking for.
