DCG Strategy Director Data Center Group Interview

      Jul 11, 2019
      Anonymous employee
      Morrisville, NC
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Lenovo (Morrisville, NC) in Jun 2019

      Interview

I had applied for the Data Center Group (DCG) Strategy Director role through Glassdoor. I was contacted by the recruiter a month after applying; by this time, I was already in the interview pipeline for similar M&A Strategy Director roles at two other large cap Silicon Valley companies. I made this very clear to the recruiter upfront -- but she (the recruiter) insisted that we talk because the hiring team was very much interested in speaking with me. I budged and I did entertain an initial 1:1 telephone discussion that lasted for about an hour and a half. I felt that that the recruiter was not familiar with the role and her questions were not at all in line with the job description. For example, she kept asking about my M&A experiences but she completely dodged my questions when I raised the issue of Chinese companies like Huawei, Lenovo, ZTE, etc. which were not allowed to do M&A investments in the US, especially given the Trump administration's tariffs and restrictions. Furthermore, given that Lenovo had recently laid off over half its workforce in the US just two months ago (and the round of layoffs were widely reported all over the press!), she seemed quite angry and annoyed at my questions around layoffs and job security (which I think were valid questions). Her reaction was even troubling given that Lenovo laid-off almost its entire DCG staff less than two months ago. In conclusion, after repeated inquiries, I did not hear back. "Ghosting candidates", especially after engaging them in interviews that takes up our valuable time, is not cool and this makes the company look very bad. But I am glad I didn't pursue this opportunity given the instability within the DCG and Lenovo in general; Lenovo not calling me back was a blessing in disguise because I just got an amazing offer from another profitable well-reputed $100B+ company in the Bay Area. The DCG at Lenovo is basically compromised of executives terminated by Intel due to poor market results. This itself is quite telling. Interview at Lenovo at your peril. Good luck!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Tell me about your M&A experiences (an odd question given that Lenovo - like Huawei and other Chinese companies - are not allowed to do M&A activities in the US).
