      Cell Biologist Interview

      Jan 11, 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at LabGenius (London, England) in Dec 2020

      Interview

Worth mentioning that as this is a small company and there are many different areas of expertise within it so the interview process may differ dramatically depending on the role. Whole process split into 6 stages. 1) Pre-screen by a recruiter. Just asked basic interview questions about experience and motivation for this role. 2) CV and cover letter. 3) Virtual interview with employee at LabGenius who would supervise the role. Fairly similar questions to the pre-screen with recruiter but more scientifically orientated. 4) Written task aligned with what role will entail. 5) In person interview with 2 LabGenius employees followed by lab tour. Got questions about the task in stage 4 and asked to explain reasoning for decisions made in that task. Also asked a lot of questions about motivations for the role and about my experience. Also asked a few questions around the theme of biotechs and setting up labs. Just getting an idea of how well you'd fit into a small biotech I guess. Was quite difficult and there were few difficult and unexpected questions in there. But both interviewers were extremely friendly and didn't really feel like an interview, more of a chat especially at the end when I was able to ask questions. 6) Interview with more senior employees (I didn't get this far so not sure what it would entail). Feedback was very slow and initially was given a generic rejection without any reasoning but after a bit of pestering I was given some helpful feedback. Overall the process was quite stressful, long and did take a significant time investment but not excessive. It was quite a stressful process as there was a lot of waiting by the phone and computer as to whether I'd got to the next stage so be prepared to wait. Recruiter, interviewers and the other employees I met were really friendly and nice which helped so I expect that any delay to the feedback was due to unfortunate timing of lockdown 3 and Christmas. So only real criticism is that the whole process was quite long and a bit repetitive at times as was asked the same questions quite a bit. So could be streamlined to save applicants time and stress. Other than that it was a good experience.

We are sorry to hear the interview process took so long, and appreciate you acknowledging the tricky time period it fell within - end of December plus another lockdown definitely didn't help. Your feedback will help us to improve our hiring process in future. We're delighted that you had positive interactions with our team throughout the process, but want to ensure it is faster and less repetitive moving forwards. Thank you.
