I was interested in teaching a group fitness class at LA Fitness in the Washington, D.C.-area. However, I'm writing this review because I had an extremely unprofessional hiring experience, which led me to walk away from the company all together. I would NOT recommend interviewing with LA Fitness.
For context, I originally reached out to LA Fitness to inquire about their availability and hiring process in early 2017. I was encouraged to apply after the area hiring manager told me she was looking to expand the fitness classes at the location nearest to me -- and she didn't have any fitness instructors who taught what I teach. Due to scheduling conflicts, the area hiring manager and I agreed to touch base again mid-summer. When I did reach back out to her, she was still interested in hiring me and scheduled an audition. The day before the audition I called her to confirm the time and location. At that point, she said, "I'm glad you called because I actually won't be there." I re-scheduled the audition for two days later. During the call, I asked her if I should call her back to confirm the new audition time, and she said no, she would definitely be there. The day of the audition, I tried calling her just in case, but she didn't answer her phone. I resorted to calling the gym where I was going to have the audition, but they didn't know the area manager by name and weren't aware of my audition. I drove one hour away from my house for my scheduled audition, but the area manager didn't show up. The gym staff said she had called the gym one hour earlier to let them know she wouldn't be in, yet she never contacted me. Not only was this extremely unprofessional, but it was disrespectful of my time and money. I never heard from her after that experience, but I eventually returned to the LA Fitness location nearest to me to inquire about what had happened. The gym staff kindly contacted upper management for me and found out the area manager had been fired. I was never given an apology and no one ever followed up with me, but through the gym staff, I did reach out to another LA Fitness employee who worked above the area manager I had previously been in contact with. Unfortunately my experience with this employee was no better. Although she said she'd schedule an audition with me, she never called me back when she said she would. I had to follow up with her multiple times because she never took the initiative to call me. She came off as unorganized and disrespectful at best. The last straw for me was when she asked me to teach a class at a time that was different from what I had previously agreed upon with the now-fired area manager. It's no surprise LA Fitness can't find enough group fitness instructors to fill their schedule with the way they treat instructors who apply.
