      Associate Corporate Counsel Interview

      May 18, 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Chicago, IL
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Keeper Security (Chicago, IL) in Apr 2021

      Interview

30 minute group interview with CEO + CFO, followed by ~20 minute conversation with CRO the next day, a Wonderlic test the morning after that, followed by an offer via phone that afternoon. I was peppered with cliché interview questions and wasn't given much chance to ask questions about the role, since the CEO monopolized the remaining time talking about how he needs somebody who doesn't "value their evenings" and is on call at all times. The whole process moved fast and felt designed to provide very little information and give very little time to have second thoughts. I was given 48 hours to respond because, "we feel like by the time you go through the interview process, you should already have a good idea whether this is a good fit." I did not. The company seems to be in the middle of a period of high turnover and high growth after VC backing was brought in, so there didn't seem to be much clarity on what this role should look like or even what the company is going to look like in a year. When the offer came in, salary was below my stated desired salary and the benefits package was *much* weaker than expected. An included equity component was impossible to value, included no information about how options could be exercised, and seemed unlikely to fully vest (if at all) based on previous counsel's tenure, the company's projected timeline for acquisition/IPO, and lack of protection from dilution. I counteroffered on compensation and title (an "associate" corporate counsel that is the sole in-house attorney and reports directly to the CEO? replacing an outgoing "General Counsel"?). I was immediately asked to have another call with the CEO, during which he first flat out refused my counteroffer, then proceeded to explain why I should be happy to accept his offer and why he doesn't actually *need* an attorney (because he "already runs circles around this stuff all day long"), he just wants to free up some of the time he feels he "wastes" doing these tasks himself. Needless to say, this didn't convince me that this would be a good career move and we decided not to move forward.
