      Graphic Design Interview

      Nov 17, 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Larkspur, CA
      Declined offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Jimmyjane (Larkspur, CA)

      Interview

At first the interview process went in a very positive direction. I had a great phone interview with the creative director and came in the following week for my first interview where I got to meet the entire staff and take a tour of their facility in Larkspur (close to the ferry building). My second face to face interview was with the new president of the company. It started off great and I thought I had a solid connection. After the interview I received a call that they wanted to hire me but well under the salary I had spoken to them about in my first phone interview. The creative director was understanding and said he'd see what he could do. I didn't get another call for several weeks and finally when I did, they suggested a new job description for me. The president of the company suggested that not only would I do the graphic design work of the first job description but also take over the website merchandising for someone who was going to leave the company. I asked about salary and they said that it would be the exact same salary they offered me before, again, well under the going rate for a mid-level designer, let alone a designer who was also going to be in charge of their web merchandising. I said I would have to think about it if we could settle on a better salary that fit the new role. In return they gave me a "project" to see if my aesthetic would also fit the role of a blog curator, something else they had tacked on to the job description at the last minute. They have me a short 24 hours to do the project and I stayed up all night making sure it was perfect. I sent the project to the president of the company and the creative director the following morning. The creative director responded quickly saying that my aesthetic on the project was the right direction and that I would be contacted again soon. I was never contacted again. It was a long process with no reward and a lack of respect and responsibility on JimmyJane's part.
