      Product Manager Interview

      Dec 4, 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Insiten

      Interview

Similar to the post below, I had an average interview experience. There was no HR, so I went straight to being interviewed by the hiring manager (Engineer) and Sales. Things moved quickly, and I received updates within 1-2 business days. The second round consists of a very long take-home assignment. I would only do product assignments if they took less than 1-2 hours and if the project is UNRELATED to their products/company. In this specific case, it was the exact opposite. Their assignment asked you to review a list of user feedback and draft features, write user stories with acceptance criteria and difficulty level, create designs/mockups for each potential feature, and write release notes, etc. If you pass, the third round will consist of an on-site interview where you present your case study. It's not worth it to do all this work, in my opinion. This type of project requires a lot of time and comes off as free work for feature ideas down to the release notes, especially if they are interviewing multiple people and giving out the same assignment. I would look elsewhere and avoid it unless I have the free time and drive to do their work for them.

      Interview

1 recruiter screen, 1 executive interview, and a take home that I didn't present, but delivered via email. I had really high hopes for this company early in the process. Then I got the take home assignment which was to create a rewards program for their AMP product. They had said the product was already finished and they were getting ready to launch, but they wanted me to design the product. At first I was hesitant designing a product for a few reasons, 1) Product Managers while jack of all trades are not designers and shouldn't be tested on their design skills, 2) designing for a companies product is often frowned upon in the industry, instead you should ask them to do a take home for a separate product. I get an email saying they are going with other candidates, no big deal, I'm looking for a job so I'm used to rejection. But then 2 weeks later they launch their feature and it looks very similar to what I had pitched them in my take home. I'm not accusing them of stealing my designs, but this is a great example of not having interviewees design for your product.
