I became aware of Inkling through my fellowship at a publishing house and applied online after hearing from an employee how much they loved working here. I was pleasantly surprised when the next morning the HR rep called and asked me for a phone interview and to take a skills test.
The skill test was to build a website from scratch that was an exact copy of a pdf I was given. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the challenge. Afterwards I had the phone interview, then was brought in for two in person interviews with some people who were genuinely excited about the company and the workplace. Finally I had a series of 4 or 5 interviews that took several hours but was interesting and gave me a really solid idea of what I'd be working on and with whom. It is a long day (all 4 were scheduled in a row) but I was expecting it.
The last step was an interview with the CEO, which had to be scheduled in advance, it was made very clear to me that I would only get this interview if they felt I was a good fit for the position I applied for. I appreciated the honesty and thought it was fair (and it made me feel great when I got to go!). The interview with the CEO was a mix of very direct discussions about my past jobs and Inkling's mission and goals. I left feeling as though I'd gotten a lot of insight into the company and enjoyed getting his perspective.
What really made it a great experience was that in the week I waited to hear if I got the position, my potential supervisor was incredibly kind and asked me to coffee so that we could talk about any questions I might have had after my interviews. It was one of the most considerate interview processes I've ever had.
