      Graphic Designer Interview

      Sep 6, 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Bethesda, MD
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Illustria (Bethesda, MD) in Jun 2015

      Interview

Applied online with resume, cover letter, link to my portfolio. Was given a surprise phone interview. (Unexpectedly received phone call along the lines of "Hi, saw you applied, have a few questions about your application." Thought I had forgotten to fill something out. Ended up being a 40 minute interview. Not a big deal, but would have been bad if I was at work. Also would have liked to have been able to prepare and put my best foot forward.) Was given a test prompt. Passing that, invited to interview in person. Said it was in DC in the listing when actually in Bethesda, MD. When I walked in everyone stopped what they were doing and stared at me- both annoying and unnerving. Relatively uneventful, but did ask some unusual questions. Ended very abruptly.

Hi there, Thank you so much for this constructive feedback. I'm very sorry that interviewing with us was a less-than-stellar experience for you. We have listened to your concerns, and actually made some permanent changes. Here they are: 1. We no longer do surprise phone interviews. As of September 1, 2015, all calls are prearranged via email with the candidates, so everyone has time to prepare and be comfortable during the phone interview. 2. We have coached the staff on making visitors to the office feel welcomed. Our recruiter, or the staff person closest to the door, personally greets candidates upon arrival. We role-played everyone looking up from their computers and smiling one morning- it was a bit silly, but we think it's working. I apologize about the confusion re: our precise location. Being in Bethesda, just over the border from DC and on the metro line, it is sometimes appropriate to advertise us as a DC area business. More accurately, we are located in Bethesda, MD. I can certainly see how that would be puzzling- please trust that we intend to be as clear as we can, while reaching the widest possible audience. Unfortunately, there's a tradeoff. On the plus side, we expect an imminent move of our offices, so in the near future that confusion may be resolved. Thank you again for your feedback- it is really helpful to us as we grow, makes mistakes, and try to learn from them for the future.

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Illustria

      Interview

I did a skype interview with design team manager and the creative director. It took about 30 minutes and I believe it was one the most productive interviews I've ever had. Their questions were relevant and to the point. They explained clearly of what is going to be the next step.

I'm so glad you had a positive experience interviewing with Illustria! We strive to get to know each candidate, not only as a designer and a professional, but also on a personal level. It is very important to us to evaluate whether there is a good personality fit with the kind of company culture that we are trying to build. We also try to craft very productive, insightful questions that allow a strong candidate to shine. Thank you so much for this positive feedback. I'm sorry that we weren't able to offer you the chance to work together, and I hope your continued search has gone smoothly and successfully!

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at Illustria (New York, NY)

      Interview

It was one of the most awkward interviews I've had. Walked into there office (not in Washington DC as mentioned on description) with current employees staring blankly and uninviting. I had a one-on-one interview with the founder and creative director and it seemed very unprofessional. It's a new/'creative' company so I can understand the informalities, but having your interviewee sit on a broken chair and read interview questions off a script just seemed too much. Plus there was no "we'll get back to you", it was just a simple thanks for stopping by (unbelievable).
