      SEO Project Manager Interview

      Feb 22, 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Ignite Visibility in Dec 2016

      Interview

I was called in to Ignite for the in-person interview. While there I met with Alan Bush, John Lincoln, and Krishan Coughran. Each brought their own questions and perspective to the interview. Alan - great guy to talk to. He really knows his SEO stuff. Alan was a solid background and appears to create a dynamic work environment. I enjoyed his off-beat SEO related questions. Thank you for not asking the typical "how do you respond to a troubled client" question. Krishan - very well dressed and smart man. He appreciated that I came in wearing a suit. I guess not a lot of people do that. Dressing for marketing/advertising jobs can be so awkward. Let me wear a suit while the guy interviewing me is rocking flip flops and board shorts. Definitely a man who knows what he is doing in his role. John - kind of came off being very hands on. I will say he is passionate if lacking a sense of humor. Felt like the type of CEO/boss who values clients more than workers. But I could be wrong. In the end I never got an offer nor did I get a rejection email. It was like the relationship where you go on a couple of dates and just don't bother calling/texting each other again. The company lacks a true HR department, which could be problematic in theory. It looks like they are doing decent work. The office was dead quiet when I walked in, which I don't particularly care for. I know we have to do work, but having some music or talking going on is nice. Had I been given an offer I honestly don't know if I would have taken it. Working with Alan would have been great. I know I could have learned so much from him. I also feel Krishan would have educated me on numerous business aspects outside of my scope. I just feel like John would have been the overbearing boss and micromanaged. I of course could be wrong, but that was just the impression I got. The mere fact he got hung up on a joke I made in an interview when everyone else was clearly laughing at its tongue-in-cheek aspect is a huge red flag for me. He does teach at UCSD, so he does know a thing or two about digital marketing. I would sign up for his class. UPDATE - John has gone out of his way to make amends and explain everything that transpired with the interview and radio silence. He is a man that truly cares about his business and image. He sent me three emails and I truly appreciate him explaining everything to me. I have a more favorable opinion now.

HI There, This is John Lincoln, CEO. I just saw your update. Thank you very much for that. I really appreciate it. Thank you for the nice things you said about Alan and Krish. They are great guys. It was quite the day you came in because it was lunch time and during the holidays. We do have an HR department, not a large one, but one nonetheless. I'm sorry if you felt we were not responsive enough. I did send an email to you saying we had pushed the hire due to the holidays. I could have followed up with you more quickly there. My apologies. Last thing I would mention is that I care about the employees and the clients a great deal. Coming from an account manager position, I understand the roles inside and out. I've been an intern, a marketing manager, a Director, you name it. So for me employee well-being comes first. On the other end, I also feel when I make commitment to a client we need to deliver. So these are things we work to balance. I wanted to let you know you were my top choice until the hire was postponed. We are hiring again now. I actually did not hear the joke you are referring to. I think you may have told that to another team member. Wishing you the best.
