      Conference Producer Interview

      Sep 14, 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at IQPC (New York, NY)

      Interview

I had 3 interviews each of which were rescheduled multiple times and drawn out over a month. They liked me enough to invite me back 3 times. They balked when I stated my salary expectation which is average for the level and below average for the area I live in. But maybe it was my personality, I don't know. I do know that they then told me they went with candidate with better credentials and reposted the job... In the job description it mentions all the training and support the company offers. However in the interview the expectations laid out were much more demanding with zero time for any kind of training. It was absolutely hit the ground running. You're expected to produce 8 conferences and have 24 days to book conference speakers. I got the feeling they expect to pay far under the industry average for much more work. This might explain why they burn through conference producers who are really working at the level of a director. The longest -bar 1 who is very senior- is a two year tenure. When I mentioned my intention to work extra time and very hard, I was flat out told by one interviewer that the job was not about hard work but about making money for the company. They attach a very small commission to incentivize this goal. I dunno, it doesn't seem like a sustainable business model for the employees.

Thank you for your feedback how we would like to respectfully note that several components of it are untrue. We'd like to take this opportunity to clarify: - We did not balk at your salary expectations, rather we were transparent upfront in letting you know that your expectations were a bit above our standard offering for this role; you replied letting us know that you were still comfortable to proceed with interviewing for the role - As per our previous email exchange, we did not repost the role; you saw a job posting for a similar position within one of our other business units (IQPC Exchange) and mistakenly assumed it was ours - We do, in fact, offer training and support both during the on-boarding and continually whilst on the job - Having interviewed and hired numerous candidates who have worked at our direct competitors, we have a firm understanding of competitive pay rates and are very much in-line with those industry averages and very often exceed them - We have a significant number of Conference Producers on our team with 2+ years of tenure and well beyond; you're assumption otherwise is totally incorrect - When you work not just harder but smarter and more efficiently, you make money for the company AND for yourself. As explained during our interviews, the variable compensation you refer to is performance based and can equate to several thousand to tens of thousands on top of the base salary. Having been in business for over 40 years, this has proven to be a very sustainable business model. Thank you and we wish you well with regards to your future career endeavors.

      Interview

Easy, quick, complex. Applied as a starting job and they were impressed. Had to answer generally about the industry given I hadn’t had a conference production job before. 3 stages I think. I stopped before second stage.

      Interview

I applied on LinkedIn through a recruiter agency. I had my screening with a recruiter who clearly didn't want to be on that interview. They asked me very minimum questions and told to go an search the company and come back to them. I did and they never responded back.
