      Junior Software Developer Interview

      Jan 6, 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Houston, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at HCSS (Houston, TX) in Dec 2015

      Interview

Long and arduous interview. Needed to test twice, once online, and once in person. Must have a certain completion rate when in person or your interview is trashed. Both tests are simple logic tests that are easily passed with high school schooling. There were 4 1:1 interviews for a duration of about 3 hours total. They do test on what knowledge you have put down in your resume. Come prepared with solid knowledge of the basics. The teacher for the training course seemed a bit standoffish. The rest of the panel, VP of HR, a Senior Software Developer (Tested concepts), and Head of Software Development were warmer. While they put down no knowledge needed, and only a high school diploma required, I think they frown against anything other than a B.S. in Computer Science. I had a different major and got grilled on it. I had prior programming experience, but they deemed me a risk to hire due to my major. The requirements for the position should be changed since I was under the impression an ideal candidate would simply be ready to learn with no prior experience needed, although the interview process gave me another impression. I have no problems with the difficulty of the interviews since they want good people, but hiring requirements should be better stated.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at HCSS

      Interview

Complete waste of time! I got a math test in an email. This math test was supposed to be completed within a week. They assured me that i would be contacted by a recruiter/representative after passing the test. So I completed the test and got 12/14, some of the questions were very weirdly phrased. It took about 35-40 minutes to complete. I waited a week and they sent me a generic rejection email. It was a waste of time and energy. I would not waste my time on applying to this type of position in the future.

I appreciate you taking the time to provide this feedback and am sorry to hear that you felt it was a waste of time and energy. Our hiring process currently includes the math/logic assessment due to the problem-solving aptitude needed for many of our open positions. Successfully completing the assessment moves you forward to the next steps where a member of the team reviews your resume more in-depth, so rest assured your resume reached human eyes. I hope you do reconsider us in the future since you're already a step closer in the process by passing the assessment and can continuously improve by showcasing your strengths on the resume in alignment with the position you applied for.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at HCSS (Sugar Land, TX) in Aug 2016

      Interview

Online status -"you will be followed up by a recruited to schedule an on-site interview". few days later, online status - "Unfortunately you were not selected"

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      1. Build an application that rolls a six-sided die to obtain a random value between 1 and 6. 2. Introduce the concept of a cup so that multiple dice can be rolled at one time. 3. Create a loaded die that, given a predetermined number, will land on that number 50% of the time (we can't be too obvious with our loaded die).
