I had a 1:1 call with the hiring manager and then a group call with the hiring manager, a sales consultant and the CEO. I was then flown out to Eugene, OR for an in person interview.
Upon arriving at the HQ I met with the hiring manager who showed me around and introduced me to everyone. We then sat down with the e-commerce manager and another employee. Everything was above board until my meeting with the CEO. The hiring manager was present for this as well. Under the guise of ‘how to you juggle it all’ asked very specific questions about my family situation and child care arrangement for my son. I don’t usually share that I have a son during an interview process for fear that it will work against me. I thought GCL was different as a company and CEO that really prides themselves on being woman owned and woman focused. The grilling I got about my personal life and family situation didn’t feel right and I expressed this to the hiring manager directly afterwards. Her response was that the CEO just had that CEO mindset and expected everyone to be at her beckon call 24/7, but that she personally had no reservations about me being able to get my work done. I explained that if I was a man with a child I would not have received the same questions to which she said nothing. I was ultimately not offered the job and told the reason why was because I didn’t have the experience calling on specific accounts. Everyone was fully aware of which accounts I had experience working on after revering my resume and participating in 2 virtual interviews before flying me out there. This CEO is a wolf in sheep’s clothing she is not the champion for woman that she presents to be, she is only a champion for one woman, herself.
