      Manufacturing Technician Interview

      Apr 29, 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Essex, VT
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at GlobalFoundries (Essex, VT) in Apr 2019

      Interview

After a slew of phone calls and emails to make sure you will attend the interview, you will approach an unmanned gate with a crackly speaker with worn out buttons to push so hard. Once you enter the lobby you'll note the floors windows, walls and carpets are absolutely filthy with telephone wires snaked about the floors. Signage is minimal and mostly computer printed and scotch taped to the walls many of IBM's signs remain on the wall even though IBM left 5 years ago. After possessing this Fab for close to 5 years now. You can clearly tell by the minimal investment made in the building and the site in general they are only keeping the Essex Jct it running to fulfill IBM's contractual obligations from the purchase 5 years ago. After waiting in the dark lobby (Maybe all of the lights were off to save electricity or maybe they all had blown light bulbs) a member of Malta's Fab HR will come along......(Yes I said Malta's Fab 8 HR) and the 3 of you will be taken to a late 1970's - early 1980's era conference room. Having worked there 23 years ago I noticed they hadn't changed at all. A brief video about the Fab's operation, Shows a site manager boasting about the ability to "Repair old computer chips and return them to the customer" as a "value add" process that is unique to the Essex Jct, VT fab. The manager in the video must have forgot about the ability to add EPI Deposition to bare wafers and sell them to other semi conductor company's as a value add process as well but then again by looking around the halls and walls and floors you can clearly tell Global Foundries isn't in Essex Jct for the long haul and making money for Global at this site isn't in the cards. Following the brief video the 3 of us were instructed to remove certain items from our person and a tour of the break rooms comes next. Each one is original equipment with filthy walls, windows and floors. I noted several floor tiles missing throughout the tour. Those particular floor tiles can be purchased at any home improvement store for about .63 cents a piece. This is another indicator Global Foundries doesn't plan on staying. Along the halls I noted the once white walls were yellowed and had mathematical equations and simple notes written on the walls from employees over the years. We were told it was "Bring your child to work day" a good excuse as any I guess. Gowning up for a line tour in the clean room is next. With nobody cleaning the gowning room this was absolutely filthy as well and while gowning up the importance of being CLEAN is explained to you. After everyone is gowned up we entered the clean room and as we walked along the line i noted all of the robots and equipment known as "Tools" were the same "Tools" that were installed 23 years ago when I had worked at this facility when it was IBM. From the chairs to the work station monitor screens it was like stepping back in time 23 years. Fixing 23 year old computer screens to keep them running must be another "Value add" Process's. The HR guide let us know that she "Doesn't really know much about the line as she works in HR and we can ask the manager sitting in the chair by the clean room entrance questions if we have any" This a good way of shutting up anyone that knows what they are talking about and is curious about weather Global Foundries plans on staying open past their obligations to IBM). Any and all questions are met with a "Yep, Yep". After a quick trip down memory lane the tour is concluded and everyone returns to meet with a member of HR for some interview questions. After some questions in the antiquated classroom, Malta's HR will lead you into the "On boarding" room. As soon as you sit down to start your login process she will come back again and state "She needs to make a phone call and it's actually getting late (7:30 pm) and the forms can be emailed to you to fill out and return in a reply email and that they will be sent out tomorrow" True to Malta Fab 8 form. The following day you'll get a "Thank you for your interest email." "With your skill set your over qualified for this role and keep an eye out for other open roles within our company" Receive offer? That's a yes and no with a little bit of maybe. If you have industry experience the interview experience is easy. If you have worked at the Essex Jct Fab in the past........You'll quickly be able to tell what's in the future for Global Foundries Vermont. After 23 years it was nice to return to where I got my start in the industry and getting to see all the old equipment we used to work on years ago. It brought back a lot of memories. All of them good. Global Foundries, Essex Jct is going to make a great semi conductor museum. Rich in history..... a lot of it still in working order to this day. HR did start off by telling us "Global Foundries has been there for 62 years"

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Mostly the same questions found on the pre-screen exam. "Name a problem you had at a job and tell me how you solved it" "Do you work and play well with others" "Do others work and play well with you"
