      Associate Attorney Interview

      Aug 30, 2016
      Anonymous employee
      Irvine, CA
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Gauntlett & Associates (Irvine, CA)

      Interview

David Gauntlett's 4+-hour "interviewing process" is a joke. You'll be required to take spelling and grammar tests and do two timed practice assignments/memos. At least one of my assignments is based on a case David argued and lost, and your job is to explain why the judge got the decision wrong. (Very petty, but consistent with his personality.) Most of the interview is David explaining why he was right and trying to spoon-feed you that opinion. If you interview with him, you'll probably notice he is somewhat rude, dismissive, and doesn't recognize social cues. You might think it's just you or that he's busy that day, but that's a small glimpse into his daily behavior. The more he gets used to you, the worse it gets.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Why do you want to work here?

The case analyzed was one Mr. Gauntlett criticized in his treatise because it failed to cite or distinguish a case in the relevant jurisdiction that would have supported a contrary result from that reached by the court ignoring a precedential case that Gauntlett & Associates successfully litigated. Positive reviews are frequent but may not lead interviewee’s to visit Glass Door which seems to attract predominantly negative or equivocal comments. One experienced attorney remarked after the interview “Thank you for the mental exercise. I was impressed and inspired by your knowledge and devotion toward your practice”

      Interview

Absolutely bizarre. You take a grammar test designed for grade schoolers and then are forced to interpret an insurance policy, despite expressing no interest in insurance law whatsoever. Afterwards, you get grilled by the managing partner about said insurance policy. I think there was a typing speed test at some point?

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Whether "bear" or "bare" was the correct word to use in a particular sentence.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Gauntlett & Associates in Jul 2017

      Interview

Only had the initial, but the partner was hell bent on having me show up and go through some kind of arbitrarily given mini bar exam. No thank you.

      Interview questions [3]

      Question 1

Was asked whether I could move directly next to the firm, apparently the hours are inflexible for his associates and sounded like a sweat shop environment.
      1 Answer

      Question 2

Was asked to highlight my accomplishments, he had my writing samples of well written and winning arguments, which he seemed to dismiss as unimportant until he could see if I could produce them in whatever timed conditions he thought was appropriate. Acting like a diva where big law does not even act as he did and where a firm isnt even willing to take care of it's own is inappropriate.
      1 Answer

      Question 3

I asked him what kind of compensation I was looking at.
