      Software Engineer Interview

      Sep 14, 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Epsilon in Aug 2020

      Interview

The process began with a call from the recruiter, where I was asked about my expected salary (which I wasn't prepared for) and told that I would be held to that amount. I wasn't told the budget or correct position for this role either. The first round was a video phone screen round. The interviewer did not have my resume before the interview and was 10 mins late to the interview. Since he did not have my resume, we spent another 5 mins trying to get my resume to him. It was a mix of Rest, java, and programming qs. It was supposed to be a 1-hour interview but was extended for 30 mins without asking if I was ok extending the interview. Also, this was supposed to be a video interview, but I was the only one on video. I wasn't happy with the level of professionalism displayed during the entire interview process. I was invited to the virtual onsite loop (video) interviews. Again, I was the only one on video which is super weird. It was a lot of overlapping questions during the interview, 2/4 interviewers asked me to design a rest app, 2/4 interviewers asked coding questions and only 1 of them was really involved and it felt like a real interview. The other coding round sounded like the interviewer had seen a solution somewhere and wanted me to solve it in that exact way despite me giving him 2-3 approaches. some of them were 5-10 mins late to the interview, never apologized for being late, and extended the interview after the scheduled time without asking if I was ok with them taking more than the scheduled time. There was also a time when an interviewer made a condescending comment when I assumed an ask I wasn't supposed to. Honestly, my experience with the team was not great at all. My suggestion would be to at least discuss what area each one of you would like to test the candidate on, keep your videos on especially when its a virtual interview, because the hiring goes 2-ways - I as a candidate should be comfortable in knowing that this is a team I would want to work with and lastly, please be punctual. In the end, I was offered less than my expected salary and the reason was that I did not do well, and since the business wasn't doing great, they couldn't match up to my expected salary. but when I declined, I was offered 5k on top of what was offered. But, I had already made up my mind.

      Interview

Expectations, discussion with a few folks, and unnecessary grilling in an environment that actively worked against your success. Ghosted after final interview. Probably one of the least competent companies I've interviewed for.
