      Assistant Editor Interview

      Feb 25, 2022
      Anonymous employee
      London, England
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Elsevier (London, England) in Jan 2022

      Interview

Very smooth process from the start. Initial application via workday, followed by a brief email chat with HR to make sure you understand the requirements, then a written task (editing an article), then a one hour interview with the managers. Interviewers were really friendly and asked good/well thought out questions. They were eager to help and overall just encouraged an active learning experience. Some questions were science specific and about the peer review process, other questions were related to how you would communicate with senior editors or authors. I was offered a role the following week and happily accepted. Overall I appreciate how smooth this process was and how brilliant the communication was - it was really easy to contact their internal recruiter and ask questions, and everyone I spoke with (recruiters, HR, managing editors) was really friendly. I also appreciate the transparency about salary which was stated to me in the early stages, and how the whole process genuinely just prioritises looking for people who can do a good job and want to work hard. Most big companies have a lot of gatekeeping and entry tests and personality tests etc before you even get to speak to a human so it is refreshing to see a company that just genuinely wants to get to know people as part of the hiring process.

      Anonymous interview candidate
      Boston, MA
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Elsevier (Boston, MA) in May 2022

      Interview

HR Screening, assignment (questions), reviewing assingment (timed), team interview. The interview process was very long and took a lot of effort. The assignments were challenging. The questions involved identifying people who you would have write review articles, topics for review articles, and identifying papers you agreed with or felt didn't belong on the journal.
