      Assistant Buyer Interview

      Feb 20, 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Portland, OR
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at E E Schenck Co (Portland, OR) in Jan 2022

      Interview

An initial phone call, then an in-person interview plus a tour of the office space and the warehouse/factory area with the president and senior level buyer. The interview process was very easy, but it was the negotiation phase after I was offered the role that really struck me. The offer that I was given was extremely low and they were not willing to negotiate a living wage. This factory is based in the Portland warehouse area on Swan Island and my house is in the Portland Metro area, saying this I brought up with the president when offered the job that a medium range for a position like this is $54,000 salary. She told me she had no idea where I was getting this information from and that the hourly offer of $19.50 was what suited the role. They were not willing to negotiate anything, which is a red flag. The other red flags were, when I interviewed with them, the company was fully in-person, working on a federal holiday, MLK Day. The first impression comes off as business as usual, despite a pandemic, so there are no remote or hybrid options. Also, when I was alone with one of the senior buyers they mentioned how their data entry system is from 1995 and is just now being updated by not even to an industry standard system. Back to the negotiation phase, I mentioned how I had my degrees, speak three languages, and other skills that bring value to this role. All in all, they could not even give me an offer that was a living wage for the Portland Metro area. I would not recommend even bothering applying with this company, they feel very exploitive and not willing to accompany basic needs. Although if you are reading this, do not lose hope. I was given a very good offer from another company shortly after this interaction that is willing to see my worth and skills that I bring to the table. The right company will see your value so please set your boundaries with your worth, do not let a company like this exploit you.
