      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Downtown Phoenix (Phoenix, AZ)

      Interview

You will have a phone screen and then an in-person interview with 2 current staff from different hierarchies. The moment you step foot on the property to the moment you drive away, you are being observed. Other city center staff on site, from the parking garage attendant to passersby are observing and interacting with you. You won't know it, but they're secret shoppers and half of them work with or for DTPHX, Inc. Once you show up to your the office, you'll interact with the office staff who will then have you sit at a table while you wait for your interview to start, at a later time than scheduled because they're "running over time." H/she will offer you water. Next, someone else will offer you water whether you have one already or not. Then, someone will walk through the door and ask you for help as if you already work there. It's all fake. They aren't really running late, it's all part of the highly-choreographed well-orchestrated team effort to see how you will respond to each situation and potential hang-up or annoyance. And this sophisticated real-world-simulation observation tank, much like the movie, The Truman Show, doesn't end until you literally get in your car and drive away from the city center property. Once your conventional interview is finished, you will continue to interact with secret shoppers the moment you step out their front door. If you really want the job this bad, use these moments to showcase your manners, proper English, body language skills, sincerity, and helpfulness. Don't forget to slow it down; don't be in a hurry. Speak clearly and smile. Say Please, Thank You, You're Welcome, and Have a GREAT Day. If anyone asks how you are doing, respond: "Very well. (pause) Thank you. And you? (smile)" Do NOT say "good-n-you?" And, of course, don't forget to recommend to the secret shopper asking a question of you (that you can't possibly know the answer to) that they should connect with DTPHX, Inc. Explain in your own words what they are/do. Give then clear directions about how to get there. Don't hesitate to WALK the person to the office yourself if you can't give accurate directions or if they pretend they don't full understand how to get to the main entrance. It's all part of the dynamic, artificially-constructed, real-time "living" interview in which you don't know you are partaking. This type of dynamic, sophisticated, real-time observation tank continues for your entire 90-day new hire probationary period. They hire professional actors of all shapes, sizes, ages, colors, and social classes in order to see how you will respond to high stress situations, persons with disabilities, lost or tired pedestrians, and pushy guests. They'll even have NICE secret shoppers who sing your praises, but don't dare ask them to fill out a comment card. They'll hire actors who are really weird characters and ask really odd questions. Don't forget to mind your facial expressions or blow these guys off. Just because (you think) they're homeless doesn't mean they're not working for DTPHX, Inc. These paid people are trying to overwhelm you and/or get you to go against your training/policies, however pitiful they are. DON'T DO IT. It's a trick. The turnover rate for Ambassadors is high, but is a great job for some Ambassadors, who have been working there for years. But most of them don't have a lot of options for work. (They lack formal education and/or don't have cars.) Management will NOT hesitate to fire you for anything deemed threatening to public perception, including drinking a diet coke... out of a can... while in the field even after you've worked there for 2 years. That's seen a promoting a brand, which is not allowed. They care more about public perception and PR than they do actually helping people. Never ask for an extra break when offered...even during the hot months. If they offer it to you, it's bait. Despite having a progressive professional appearance policy (crazy hair, tattoos, and piercings are OK), they run a tight ship. Never be late or eat a snack during a pre-shift meeting. They act like they're government, corporate giants, or military employers. It's not a laid back place to work despite the good natured field staff. They're on the books as an "org" but their official name is Downtown Phoenix, Inc., for a reason. This is not a 501(c)3...just a similar 501c-something.
