      Communications Manager Interview

      Jun 16, 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Discord

      Interview

TL:DR - It’s a rigorous and structured interview process that doesn't set a candidate up for success (ex. 5-6 hours of video interviews using/testing their product...anyone heard of Zoom fatigue?) I submitted my resume online. I was contacted by the recruiter, who told me at the top of the call the agenda for the next 30 minutes, which included a description of the job, what they’re looking for, Q&A about my experience. Lastly, a chance for me to ask questions. Next step was the hiring manager. This is a 45-minute call where they talked about the job, role it played and asked questions. If you passed, you’re given a writing prompt, where you write out a future plan on one of their products. You’ll present this to the hiring manager and their manager in the last stage of their interview process. Finally, you’ll be contacted by the coordinator to schedule the last day of interviews. You’ll get a pre-interview call from the recruiter who tells you what to expect from your 5-6 hour interview video session using/testing their product. You’ll be presenting your writing prompt to the hiring manager and their manager. Then, you will have 5 individual interviews with different people about 30 minutes each. They are given questions from the hiring manager to ask you. BTW - They use their own product, Discord to conduct the interview via messaging and video. Don’t worry, you won’t be the only one expecting technical difficulties with their product. A couple of the folks on the call also had difficulties on their own platform. At the end of your interview schedule, you’ll have a 15-30 minute wrap-up with the hiring manager and recruiter. Bonus: They give you a $20 gift card to door dash, which feels so minor after all the work and prep you’ve done for them.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      - Tell me an experience where everything went wrong and what would you do to change it - Tell me a time where things didn’t go according to how it was planned - Was there a project that didn’t go the way you wanted it to? - If you’ve made it this far, you’ll see they ask the same question and use different words

Thanks for taking the time to meet with us. We're sorry to hear that the interview process wasn't a great experience, which is truly what we strive for. In an ideal non-COVID world, we would have all of our candidates interview in-person, and we’ve been attempting to achieve a similar experience digitally. We are also sorry to hear the product experience wasn't great for you. While we don't expect candidates to be product experts, we make it a point to empower our candidates to get comfortable with and make connections on Discord. In any case, we genuinely appreciate the time that you took to prepare and interview with us. As we grow and reintegrate in-person interviews, we do hope that you keep us in mind for future opportunities Eli Hamel Head of Recruiting
