I was initially contacted by a local recruiter through LinkedIn. Upon scheduling our initial phone call, the recruiter then proceeded to both a.) skip the call, leaving me sitting by my phone for an hour and b.) ignore all attempts to reschedule for three weeks. Finally, after emailing a complaint, the recruiter finally reached out and the process began in full. The subsequent phone screen, technical interview, interview with the VP of engineering, and interview with the CEO himself went well. However, upon touring the office, I became concerned that the company exhibited a rather clickish atmosphere, and further research into former employee's statements seemed to support this. I proceeded and decided to wait and received an offer shortly after the final interview. As life often will do, I received another formal offer from a second company not hours later that would allow me to pursue my absolute passion, machine learning. I sent a polite rejection to ClassPass the next day. This is where things rapidly declined. The recruiter proceeded to call me back, incredulous that I would "reject their offer", threatening that doing so would "leave a bad taste in ClassPass's mouth", and stating that ClassPass was the best I could hope for given my location. The recruiter then repeatedly brought up salary difference between the other offer. Thinking I might have an unconscious bias toward the higher pay, I agreed to the recruiter seeing if ClassPass would match the offer. The recruiter first called back declining, stating that they wanted "missionaries not mercenaries", but then called not an hour later agreeing to match. I agreed to view the offer, but at this point my view of the company and earlier impression had been all but confirmed. ClassPass was a predatory, cultish, unprofessional facade of actual Silicon Valley startups. I rejected their second offer not an hour later. My advice to those applying is to be wary, ClassPass expects total allegiance. In my years of professional experience, never have I been berated and gaslighted for rejecting an offer.
