I applied online. I interviewed at Caltrans (San Bernardino, CA) in Mar 2017
Interview
Applied January, reached out to in February, interviewed March, conditional offer extended April
Interview was strange - Panel interviewers, strange questions that were vaguely worded and had very subjective answers, only took about 30 minutes
Only had 1 in-person interview before receiving an offer (and that whole process with HR and med screenings ended up being so weird and the salary was so low that I ended up declining it).

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Caltrans (Oakland, CA) in Aug 2016
Interview
Very extensive application process. Interview consisted of a 15 minute writing exercise and a 45 minute oral panel. During the writing exercise you were given an archaeological report prepared by a caltrans archaeologist and asked to read and assess for taking the correct steps. The oral panel consisted of three interviewers taking turns asking questions regarding experience, ability in handling stressful situations, etc. It was a difficult interview that I spent weeks preparing for, but there were more qualified candidates. The caltrans staff were very nice through the entire process.
