      Product Manager Interview

      Feb 23, 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Bostik (New York, NY)

      Interview

I received an email from an in-house recruiter for a screening call. The call was fairly straightforward. I then had to jump through a few hoops including an excessive and seemly meaningless 4 hours of bizarre online assessments, half of which tested skills not related to the position. They then set up a phone interview with the hiring manager. Part of me appreciated the manager's honesty but realistically, there's no good explanation behind disparaging the company to a prospective employee besides the manager being frustrated and at the end of his rope. Not the best way to sell the job. In addition, he didn't seem to have a plan for the phone call, wasn't organized, and lost his train of though several times. Ever optimistic, I was okay overlooking these typical deal breakers because the position was a great fit and matched perfectly with my experience. At the end of the call he offered to bring me in for an in person interview. That day the recruiter contacted me with some dates. They wanted me to come in for 4-5 hours of interviews, which is a lot but fine. With the flags that had been raised this far into the process I wanted some time to talk with a lot of people to see if the culture wasn't manageable. That's when out of nowhere there's a strange 30 minute presentation on "whatever I feel like". Odd because no one mentioned it. I sat on it a few days. With the managers comments and my experiences, it was seeming obvious that the company didn't value and wastes people time routinely and just wasn't feeling right. I still loved the position and wanted to give the place one last chance. So I contacted the recruiter and told her my policy was not to give presentations during interviews and asked if they were still interested in interviewing. She was then quite rude which sealed the deal for me. Not doing the presentation being a deal breaker for them is understandable but there's no need to be rude. Professionals understand that.
