      Full Stack Developer Interview

      Apr 29, 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Remote, OR
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Born Again Media (Remote, OR) in Apr 2019

      Interview

I was approached by a recruiter at LinkedIn about this position, and initially the invitation to the process was very nice and kind, soon after I got into some phone and video screening processes I had to do a live coding exercise and the recruiter showed how poor experience and knowledge has on this subject. There are already tons of articles written by top silicon valley engineers and recruitment managers about the pitfalls of live coding exercises, yet he asked me to basically turn off live debugging and code syntax, for Christ sake it’s 2019, things like syntax, intellisense and live code evaluation are tools that help us make better software and better developers, yet Born Again Media expects to hire a developer who can write code with almost no tools or feedback. And yes there are such amazing individuals most of there with over 15+ years of exp, but none of them will come into a gig that offers a salary compensation that is not even on the range of a Junior developer. After this I struggled and got nervous of the aggressive recruiter attitude throwing phrases like “What’s the matter? You can’t code without the live code evaluation or the syntax highlighter? Are you saying too me that yo test every single line of code you write?” 40 minutes and I wasn’t able to complete it. After talking to him and hanging up the Hangout call I was able to solve the code exercise in less than 10 minutes, you have no idea what makes a good engineer and have a long way of learning basic respect for people.

Hi, thank you so much for your feedback! We’re sorry to read you had a bad experience during our interview process. We aim to be very clear with our salary ranges, the hiring process, and expectations from our initial contact. We try to gain as much insight as possible about candidates throughout our hiring process. We’re aware of the pitfalls of live coding exercises, and because of that, we do not use it as a definitive reason to disqualify a candidate. As we explained at the beginning of the live coding exercise, we absolutely do not evaluate code syntax or even that the code runs smoothly in this exercise, all these since our goal is to get an idea of how the candidate approaches and solves a problem. We are very much aware that candidates can be nervous during this stage; hence, we try to be as understanding and supportive as possible. We will strive to keep improving our process to make it as efficient as possible and continue to bring the best candidates into our company.
