      Propulsion Development Engineer Interview

      Mar 23, 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Kent, WA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Blue Origin (Kent, WA) in Mar 2017

      Interview

Applied online, 2 weeks later get a call from HR to set up a phone screen with a couple of engineers to talk about my experiences and resume. A few days later get another call to set up on-site interview. The on-site interview begins with a tour of the Kent facilities, then you give a 1 hour presentation about your experiences to a panel of engineers. After the presentation, you go into 1:1 interviews with some of the panelists going into more detail about your work and how that ties into what Blue Origin does. After some interviews, you break for lunch with some more engineers (who may not have been in the presentation) and ask/answer some more questions. Then you go back to finish up 1:1 interviews. This sounds like an intense process, but everyone is really friendly and it goes by more quickly than you think.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I was shown the BE-3 engine and was asked to identify which turbopump corresponded to fuel and which to oxidizer, and then why they need a seperate shaft/turbine to power each when other engines use a common shaft/turbine to power both fuel and oxidizer turbopumps.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Blue Origin

      Interview

Applied online, was contacted within two weeks by HR to see if I was interested in a phone interview. Had a phone interview the following week with one of the Propulsion team managers, mostly going through my resume. Was contacted within a couple of days to set up an on-site interview, which was with a panel of 5 engineers and strictly technical. You are asked to make a 40 minute presentation of your work to the panel, they ask technical questions there, then you break up for individual 30-40 min interviews with each engineer.

Tell me what options are there out there to measure flow rate and when/why would you use each one of the different options

      Propulsion Development Engineer Interview

      Average interview

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Blue Origin (Kent, WA)

      Interview

Really cool interviews at a really cool company! One of the recruiters reached out to me a couple of weeks after I applied online, and he set up a phone interview with an engineer from Blue. After the 30 minute interview, they got back to me (actually later that day) about setting up an on site interview in Kent. They flew me out to Washington for two nights a couple weeks later for interviews. I had to give a presentation about myself and my experience to a group of four engineers, and then did one-on-one interviews with each. Everyone was super friendly! Most of the interviews focused on my senior design project, as well as project/risk management from other projects I've been involved in. Nothing too hard, mostly high level engine design stuff. Perhaps the hardest questions were about qualifying the New Shepard vehicle, and how many flights I'd want to see before flying on it myself, letting my parents fly in it, and then letting the public fly in it. They got back to me with an offer roughly a month after my on site interview.
