      AI Research Intern Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Applied Materials (Santa Clara, CA) in Mar 2026

      Interview

The interview process included multiple rounds. I passed all online assessments, including the coding round (HackerRank style). And then there were two online interviews (behavioral and technical discussions). While some team members were pleasant to speak with, one of my technical rounds was highly unprofessional and raised major red flags about the team's culture and understanding of a university internship program. During this specific technical interview, the interviewer appeared disengaged from the start. I gave a standard, brief introduction (under two minutes), but the interviewer reacted with visible impatience. When it was time for the technical assessment, there was zero collaborative discussion. The interviewer simply dropped a coding prompt into the chat box and expected me to work on it with no context, guidance, or two-way dialogue. The most concerning part happened at the end of the interview. When I asked a standard question about their expectations for an intern in this role, the interviewer straightforwardly told me that they are looking for someone who is "already good" and that they "do not want to train anyone.
