      Assistant Manager Interview

      Jun 16, 2026
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Chicago, IL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Akira (Chicago, IL) in May 2026

      Interview

I was contacted fairly quickly after applying. The interviewer was not very organized, throughout the process I had to follow up after not hearing back by the days or times I was told I'd get an answer. More than once I had to reach out multiple times before getting a reply. The first video interview was pretty easy, though it was conducted while they were in store which made it rather distracting & hard to hear them. I was asked to come in for an in person interview & they loved everything I said & ; did. When I asked was there any feedback for me there really wasn't any. They loved my outfits I picked for the fake client, what I pointed out that could be improved in the store (after being asked), my personality, etc. I felt there was no way I would not get hired. So once I heard back I was told that the store I interviewed for hired for the role but that another store had an opening & they wanted to know if I was interested because they wanted to be able to fit me somewhere. I said no problem, I'm fine with that location. I was asked my salary requirements & I was reluctant to say so I insisted I'd be opening to hearing their offer. I was pressured to answer being told they needed to know in order to move forward. I provided the range that the company posted online which was about a $30k difference & said I'd want to be on the higher end of that range. I was then told this store is too low volume to get the highest, which I found hard to believe so I said I'd be happy with a number in the middle of the range but am open to negotiating. Eventually I was rejected because they don't have the budget to pay what I requested. So basically they forced me to give a number, I gave one based on THEIR posted salaries & they never attempted to negotiate or counter offer, even after I reiterated this in my response to my rejection, only to get no reply. Again, this was days after I was told I'd hear back. Though I was assured they'd reach out "later this year" about other roles, I cannot imagine I'd accept any role based on how the interview process went. This all felt very disorganized & chaotic which coincides with what the other reviews said. I was excited about the opportunity but the way this was handled changed that. It was seemingly a big waste of time with no consideration regarding how they essentially misled me with fake salary ranges. Even if I just wasn't the right fit, they could have handled it in a more professional way.
