      Field Service Engineer Interview

      Jun 29, 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Abbott

      Interview

Tl;dr - Wasted of time. Company uses Hire Vue to conduct interviews explaining this method is 'efficient', however, I believe is Abbott is lazy and impersonal by doing this. For a company that is supposed to care about people and helping people around the world, I felt as if they showed very little regard for potential candidates interested in working with them which makes me question and second guess key points the company talks about in the "About Us" section on their website. I applied for a Field Service Engineer position at Abbott. A few days later I received an email from a senior recruiter expressing interest in my qualifications (my experience matched job qualifications very well), I was asked to complete a digital interview to get to know me better and recruiter really pushed how efficient and great Hire Vue is. Red flags were already raised... I felt like this was process was impersonal and gimmicky, as if the company sees itself on such a high pedestal that they couldn't spare a few minutes to talk to me before asking me to record myself for them. I almost didn't want to complete the digital Hire Vue because (risk:reward) of the amount of effort I would have to put forth considering the company hasn't scheduled a time for a phone screen or a first phone interview -- there is always a phone screen or phone interview. At the time I really liked this company, therefore I put all my effort into preparing for the Hire Vue digital interview, I spent 3 days preparing, professionally dressed up and made sure my surroundings and electronics were in check; keep in mind that I still haven't spoken to anyone at the company yet (talk about feeling like a number). After completing my Hire Vue digital interview, I felt very confident in my answers and confident I'd hear back... 'crickets'. What I found distasteful, after I completed the video questions portion of the Hire Vue digital interview, the company asks basic screening questions in multiple choice format, these screening questions should be asked BEFORE an interview because they can easily disqualify a candidate... questions like: 1. Do you have any derogatory marks on your drivers license in the last 3 years? If yes explain. (My answer was no) 2. How much compensation ($) do you expect to receive? (My answer $30/hour and this was the highest selection) 3. How much are you willing to travel? (My answer 75%+ and this was the highest selection) 3 weeks pass after my interview. I emailed the HR recruiter expressing my concern, but never heard back from the HR recruiter; the recruiter evidently couldn't be bothered with a personal email or phone call. 1 more week passes and I received a generic job rejection email stating "many qualified candidates," and "we'll keep your record on file". There seems to be a trend in this company with being impersonal before and after the interview. I strongly feel like the company should've conducted a phone screen or phone interview at the very minimum rather before wasting my time preparing for this lame Hire Vue digital interview. Also communication from HR would be fantastic, I sent 2 emails to the HR recruiter throughout the hiring process and never received a response to. On the bright side I could consider myself lucky this happen, my experience through the hiring process and the senior recruiter exemplifies what my experience could've been if hired with Abbott, summed in a few words: impersonal, lack of communication and empathy.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Abbott (New Brunswick, NJ) in May 2022

      Interview

Interview process was rather simple. Phone call with recruiter, then an online interview. Company did not inform the denial of the position—had to follow up multiple times to get an answer. This does not help, especially when considering multiple jobs at once.
