      Application

The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at ATA Engineering (Canyon Country, CA)

      Interview

I was interviewed by two people: a Dr. Jekyll and a Mr. Hyde. The first interview was just a normal, if a bit intense, professional interview over the phone. Things were going great and I was excited. They wanted a follow up soon after, which was handled by the same guy. But this same “professional” who interviewed me earlier turned into a massive jerk who asked inappropriate personal questions and even accused me of lying about having earned an M.S. He had already verified all of my documentation through official university channels. He just wanted to... what? Make me squirm for the hell of it? Take this with a grain of salt, of course. I’ve met several good ATA folks in my current role and have heard good things from their customers. Perhaps it’s just ATA management or even just this one guy who don’t know how to behave decently in a workplace. I was declined (of course) so I never got to visit their HQ and try to figure out if such behavior is smiled upon or common within the company.

Dear Former Applicant, We appreciate your candid feedback and have submitted the referenced incident for review and further clarification from our management team. It is disappointing to hear that you had a less than positive interview experience. All of ATA Engineering’s applicants are asked to provide transcripts to verify courses completed and degrees awarded in order to ensure the quality and expertise of our engineers as communicated to our customers. It is unfortunate to hear that you felt the request for clarification was directed at you specifically, but please be assured that all applicants are asked to provide the same standard materials and complete the same phone interview before visiting our facilities. We hope that this outreach provides clarification and understanding for the request made during your phone interview. Our team appreciates your acknowledgement of other much more positive experiences that you have had working with our team of employee owners and hope that you continue to have such interactions going forward. Sincerely, Human Resources ATA Engineering, Inc.

      Interview

After expressing interest online, if the recruiter contacts you, you’ll be asked to fill out a formal application and submit a writing sample. Then, there is a one hour phone call with a few people in groups that align with your interests. It was mostly conversational to talk about past experiences and future interests. The last step is an onsite interview where you give a presentation and have a panel interview. The rest of the day involves meeting in breakout groups to talk about the different disciplines. It was very enlightening and made the work and culture seem great. It is disappointing if you don’t get an offer after arranging things in your schedule to be away for a few days—I do wonder if whatever goals or experiences they were looking for could have been assessed before traveling to the on site interview. But it was overall a good interview experience.

      Question 1

Why did you decide to be an engineer? Why are you interested in ATA?

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at ATA Engineering

      Interview

First was a phone interview by a member of the leadership team and it lasted 1.5 - 2 hrs. Relatively straightforward, he had a number of questions prepared but a lot of it is focused on yourself talking about your interests, skills, past experience etc. Second was a full day interview (8hrs) via zoom. Gave a research presentation, then group interview, then individual meetings. Had no technical questions throughout the entire process. Overall, the process is not very difficult and the people seem nice. However, after taking the time off work for 10+ hours of interview time, to prepare a research presentation, and all the emotional energy attached with this 3 week process - I was simply given a generic email from HR declining my application. There is a huge disconnect with how personal they are with you throughout the process and how they deal with you once they aren't interested anymore, especially for a smaller company. This is only meant as a warning for future interviewees to not get too invested because, in the end, companies don't even see us as people.
