      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at AAUW

      Interview

It was a very long and drawn out process that raised plenty of red flags. However, I really believed in their organizational mission and vision and wanted to see it through. I interviewed twice. The first one was an hour long, and peppered with seemingly repetitive questions. Weeks would pass by between each interview, and it was hard to get a gauge on their organizational culture. Having done my research, I was familiar with some of their issues with staff and it was difficult to get a genuine and authentic read on the management I interviewed with.

      Interview

The HR rep interviews you first on the phone for about 30 minutes. Pretty standard interview questions (e.g. "What are your strengths? weaknesses? Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a coworker..." etc.). In the second interview, you meet in person at AAUW with 3 people: the program supervisor, the branch relations manager, and a program assistant. It is clear that they have little to no experience interviewing candidates past a first round. Environment: They sat the candidate in an extremely awkward position at the head of a table that was broken and in a room that had people coming in and out of the adjoining space, slamming doors, talking loudly and disrupting the interview. Questions: They read from a sheet of paper about 60 questions long, each asking essentially the same thing but in different ways. There was no attempt to ask followup questions or create a conversation where they could learn more about the candidate. Having requested a presentation based on a case scenario in advance in which a powerpoint presentation was necessary, they did not even provide the tools for the candidate to present their work (i.e. no screen or power hook up, let alone computer capabilities). Communication was poor among the three interviewers as they kept repeating questions without realizing it and stumbling over their answers to the candidate's questions surrounding the job. Overall, this interview was not very thoughtful or respectful to the candidate.
